Web 2.0 is an emerging technology and social force.
What is Web 2.0? - A
Practical Definition
Web 2.0 is about users
creating communities and media to discuss ideas,
products and services.
Web 2.0 includes terms
such as citizen journalism, new media, Business 2.0,
Web 2.0, Enterprise 2.0, web communities, wikis,
blogging / weblogs, social bookmarking, social browsing,
viral marketing, podcasts, RSS feeds, web services,
social software and a variety of other sub groups.
The simplest point is that whether online or in the
physical world humans form networks. The tools are now
available for humans to be more social online.
Why is Web 2.0 A Trend of interest to Business?
Web 2.0 is basically
about human's using technology in social networks.
Included in Web 2.0 is
a series of new mediums, which are primarily of interest
to business as markets fragment and mass-markets no
longer gather around television or mass media.
Many people are online rather than in front of the TV
or newspaper.
In one example, Web 2.0 allows users to be reached
who are no longer mass-media consumers, or who fast
forward or skip adverts.
This can apply to commercial or social messages that
are appropriately targeted.
However, it is imperative that the message has
relevance to its recipients.
Why are ad agencies behind in Web 2.0?
Most ad agencies still make their money from
traditional media and commissions on ad-spend. Web 2.0
competes with ad-spend.
Many of the poorer ad agencies are also used to a
world where they can dump and run commercial
messages without consumer backlash.
Web 2.0 is of interest as it provided better metrics
than mass media.
Who is on Web 2.0?
Although popularly Web
2.0 sites are supposed to be visited by Generation Y,
many of those 50 plus are using sites, and research
supports that their is a huge number of 60+ aged
persons.
Married couples also use web 2.0. Mainstream media in
many countries has been incorrectly focussed on the
Generation Y, not other groups.
Internet use of Web
2.0 sites in countries like USA, Australia, Korea and
France are broad and deep. Some sites are country
focussed some global.
Web 2.0 is identified
by the sites such as digg.com, myspace.com, you-tube.com,
Where is Web 2.0 now and in the future?
In broader terms, Web
2.0 is actually the short-/mid-term focus of the long
term possibilities of the semantic Web, termed by
Web Inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee.
In short, Web 2.0 is
not new technology, it is new ways of using
technology primarily centred around social
communities.
